Cold Legistics is a neo-soul producer (Chris Brassard) based out of Providence, Rhode Island. Northern Star is a follow up instrumental drop to his 2009 effort Deeper Than You Think. Upon first listen, it is clear that he is a dedicated beatsmith. The mixing and secondary beats are certainly a notch above. The tracks on this album are all drum based, and while each contain impressive beats, the drums seem to dominate excessively. Instead of switching it up, each sounds like they have a drum foundation with side instruments and samples growing out. It would be nice if he showed an ability to build into a beat (i.e. Ableton… maybe he even used Ableton but just felt more confident using drums as the preeminent sound). But this is really the only criticism worth mentioning. Overall the productions offer high quality rhythm and a fresh “feel good” groove. Definitely worth bumpin’, so peep it. Especially if you like hearing drums murked with no prejudice.
